The eldest son of Edwin Sandys of Greenwich sat for Worcester from 1718 until he became Lord Sandys in December 1743.

Became a Privy Councillor in 1742, Chancellor and Under Treasurer of the Exchequer and a Lord at the Treasury, 1742-1743, Chief Justice in Eyre South of Trent 1755-1756, and North of Trent 1759-1761. Speaker at the House of Lords 1756-1767.
