William Lygon was the Mayor of Worcester 1895 and Lord Lieutenant of Gloucester 1911-31. Honorary Colonel in several regiments in Great Britain and Australia. Governor of New South Wales from 1899-1902, Steward of H.M. Household 1907-1910.

He carried the sword of State at the Coronation of King George V, was Chancellor of London University from 1929-1931, and became a Privy Councillor in 1906.
