King George III (1738–1820)

Date: c.1788

Medium: Oil on canvas

Measurements: H 240 x W 155 cm (E)

Artist: Christopher William Hünnemann

Work type: Painting

Acquisition method: presented to the City by the King, 1788

Presented to the City by the King himself after his visit of 1788, this portrait was long believed to be the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Modern experts have discounted this attribution, indeed it is in the style of Gainsborough rather than Reynolds and may therefore be the work of C.W. Hunneman (see portrait on the opposite wall) who was a well-known copyist of Gainsborough’s work
